Dakar Desert Rally Offline Custom Races: Practice with a Plan

Open the correct mode for solo practice
According to the official Dakar Desert Rally FAQ, offline custom races are reached from Main Menu → Free Mode → Custom Play, with or without bots. This is useful when you want a focused practice session rather than another long attempt at a career event.
The menu path describes a game mode, not a guarantee about a store client's first-time activation requirements. Install the game and required content before planning a session without a connection. If you are troubleshooting an online invitation, keep that separate from the question of whether you can drive a solo custom race.
Give the session one purpose
Pick a single target before loading: smoother steering, earlier braking or more reliable navigation. A run intended to improve all three often becomes another unfocused race. Choose a familiar vehicle and a short route so you can compare attempts without spending most of the session reaching the section you wanted to practice.
For steering, aim to finish three corners without a large correction after the exit. For braking, choose a recognizable approach marker and vary only the point where you ease off. For navigation, slow down enough to explain each decision before accelerating. These are suggested exercises, not built-in objectives or claimed game achievements.
Change one variable between attempts
Keep the same route, vehicle and view for the first few runs. If you alter the camera and controller response at the same time, an improvement is difficult to attribute. Write down the change and the observed result, even if the note is simply “easier to see the next turn, no change in steering.”
Compare consistency before speed. One unusually quick run with several near misses is less useful as a baseline than three controlled runs. Once the basic exercise feels repeatable, add difficulty gradually: more pace, a less familiar vehicle or a route requiring more decisions. Avoid adding all of those at once.
Use mistakes to choose the next drill
If you repeatedly lose the line while reading instructions, the next session should reduce steering demands and concentrate on navigation. If you know where to go but keep missing the turn, work on approach speed. If the car reacts unexpectedly even at low speed, inspect the controls before blaming your route reading.
