Identify what “lag” means on your PC
Before lowering every option, describe the symptom. Is the picture continuously slow, does it pause briefly in certain places, or does the car react late while the image remains smooth? Long loading times, irregular frame delivery and a controller issue need different tests. A graphics preset cannot explain all three.
This guide provides a comparison method, not benchmark results or a promised FPS increase. First check the publisher's PC requirements and our requirements table. Record your GPU, RAM, display resolution and current preset so you know the starting conditions.
Establish a short baseline
Pick a short section you can repeat with the same vehicle and view. Close unnecessary background applications, let downloads finish and keep the laptop connected to its normal power supply if applicable. Run the section once to become familiar with it, then note where the slowdown appears on the next attempt.
Use an available frame-rate display if you already have one, but also record whether the timing feels consistent. A single peak number says little about a pause before a corner. Avoid installing multiple overlays just for this test; each extra component introduces another possible source of interference.
Compare resolution before fine detail
Lower the rendering resolution or a relevant scaling option, if available, and repeat the same section. If the run becomes clearly smoother, the graphics workload is a useful place to investigate. If little changes, do not assume that texture quality must be the answer. Background work, memory pressure or another bottleneck may need attention.
Next, compare one available detail setting at a time. Keep a simple log: setting changed, test location and result. If a change produces no visible benefit, restore it before testing the next option. This avoids ending with a very low-quality image that still has the original problem. Do not copy an exact FPS target from a machine with different hardware.
Prefer a sustainable result
Once you find a workable balance, try a longer session and a different stage. A configuration that appears stable for one quiet scene may struggle elsewhere. If you use a frame cap, compare a limit your PC can maintain against an uncapped run and judge consistency rather than the highest displayed number.
