Dakar 18 Gamepad Setup: Fix Drift and Nervous Steering

Start with a controller check
A useful Dakar 18 gamepad setup starts with a predictable steering response. If the car turns without input, or swings from side to side after every correction, diagnose that behavior on a short, repeatable section before changing vehicles or difficulty. This guide offers a calibration routine, not a universal sensitivity preset: different controllers have different stick wear and travel.
Connect one controller and disconnect spare wheels or gamepads for the first test. Open the game's controls screen and confirm that steering, throttle and brake respond to the intended inputs. Note the current settings or take a screenshot before making changes. Returning to a known starting point is much easier than remembering several sliders.
Separate stick drift from overcorrection
On a flat section, release the steering stick and drive gently forward. Repeat in the opposite direction if the terrain allows it. A vehicle that pulls only on one sloping surface is not enough evidence of controller drift. Look for the same unwanted input in the controller's calibration display or another game.
If your controls menu provides a steering deadzone, raise it only until unwanted input stops. A large deadzone can replace drift with a different problem: nothing happens near the center, then the car suddenly turns. Test the transition from a light thumb movement to a medium turn. Use the smallest stable setting rather than copying a number from another player's worn controller.
Tune with three short runs
Use the same vehicle, view and route for each run. First, drive a straight line with small corrections. Next, take a broad turn at moderate speed. Finally, brake before a tighter bend and release the steering as you exit. Change only one available steering setting between runs so you can identify what improved.
If you weave on the straight, try smaller stick movements before changing sensitivity again. If you cannot reach the required steering angle in a slow corner, check the input range and binding. Those are different symptoms and should not receive the same adjustment. An input problem will usually follow you across corners; a braking mistake often appears only at higher approach speeds.
Practice before a full stage
Choose a short practice target: three turns without a large correction after the apex. Keep your eyes farther along the route and release the stick progressively as the car straightens. Add navigation only after the steering feels familiar; fighting the controller and reading the roadbook at the same time makes diagnosis difficult.
