Bike Games: Jump and Landing Practice for Beginners

Find out what kind of bike game you are playing

A motorcycle racer, a bicycle downhill game and a side-view trials game may all feature jumps, but their controls and goals can be very different. Read the game's own instructions before assuming that leaning, braking or accelerating in the air has a particular effect. Some titles use simplified tricks; others give you more direct control over the bike's attitude.

This guide is for video-game practice, not real-world riding. Start with a title from our bike and motocross collection and choose a small, repeatable jump. Avoid learning the controls on the largest gap in the level, where a tiny mistake can obscure what actually happened.

Keep the first takeoff consistent

Pick a visible starting point and approach at approximately the same speed. Use the same line and avoid an extra steering correction immediately before the ramp. Your first goal is to observe the default jump: where the bike rises, how it rotates and where it lands when you make minimal corrections.

If you land short, compare a slightly faster approach. If you overshoot the usable landing, reduce the approach speed. Change one of those variables at a time. Trying a new speed, a different line and a midair trick together gives you little information about the result.

Add balance inputs in small steps

Where the game provides a balance or lean control, try a short input and observe its direction. Let the bike settle rather than holding the input throughout the whole jump. If the correction causes rotation the opposite way on landing, the input may be too large or too late for that game's physics.

Watch the landing slope rather than only the bike. A landing that looks awkward in the air may match the slope below, while a perfectly level bike may be poorly aligned with it. Use the game's response to judge whether your adjustment helped. Do not rely on one universal wheel angle or keypress duration across titles.

Practice the exit as well as the landing

A jump is not finished when the wheels touch down. Leave room to settle and make the next turn. If every landing is followed by a crash into a barrier, compare a slower takeoff or a different approach line instead of concentrating only on midair balance.

Aim for three landings that leave you able to continue the level calmly. Then move to a larger jump or add one trick if the game supports it. For another style of vehicle-control practice, try rally keyboard steering. Keep the game's control legend visible until the relationship between your input and the bike's movement is familiar.
